The 2017 Five Star Bus Roadeo was held on Saturday, March 18th at the GTrans state-of-the-art LEED Silver Certified transportation and maintenance facility. Six municipal transit agencies – Big Blue Bus, Culver City Bus, GTrans, Montebello Bus Lines, Norwalk Transit, and Torrance Transit – participated in the competition to showcase the defensive and safety driving skills of their respective bus operators. Contestants had to strategically maneuver 40-foot buses through an obstacle course that included judgment stops, diminishing clearance, and left-hand and right-hand turning. Operators were also judged on personal appearance, smoothness of operation, and duration of obstacle clearance.
GTrans is proud to announce it took home this year’s grand prize trophy for best overall transit agency with the highest combined team score. This is a first-ever win for GTrans. A big thank you to all the bus operators who competed in the event and congratulations to our very own operator winners – Mr. Charles Nichols, Mr. Timothy Woods, and Mr. Melvin Dockery – who took first, second, and third place in our transit division. Winners of the event can go on to compete in regional and international contests. The event is a great opportunity to promote and increase ridership safety and allow drivers to network with transit members from the wider Los Angeles area.
